Who We Are
The Center for Benedictine Life at the Monastery of St. Gertrude (CBL) ) is a forward-looking Benedictine women’s monastery in the Roman Catholic tradition in Cottonwood, Idaho.
St. Gertrude’s is taking monastic tradition into the future by establishing the CBL as a resource center for people looking for spirituality and sense of meaning beyond the boundaries of traditional institutions.
We are currently 25 vowed sisters, close to one hundred oblates (associates), twenty-one employees, and numerous volunteers, friends and benefactors. We operate a 22-room retreat center, a four-unit bed and breakfast, and an award-winning museum with welcome center and gift shop. We offer residential programs for artists and a co-housing community for women who want to live Benedictine life.
Job Brief
The CBL is hiring a full-time, on-site Marketing and Communications Coordinator to be part of our Mission Advancement Team. The position will develop and implement strategies that creatively communicate our mission and ministries to the public. The successful candidate will report to the Prioress (head of the Sister’s community) and work closely with the Mission Advancement team. In this capacity, the position will support all CBL initiatives and ministries including: the Monastery, Spirit Center, Inn and Museum.
Compensation
Compensation is $35,000-$55,000 annually, depending upon experience. Benefits include employee health insurance, paid vacation and sick leave, professional development opportunities and a retirement program.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with CBL departments to develop and execute marketing and communications strategies to support increased awareness and commitment among stakeholders in our mission and ministries; and
- Work with CBL stakeholders to ensure all communications and marketing programs are consistent with our mission, ministries’ programs and services.
Marketing
- Develop a comprehensive marketing plan with goals, identified audiences and programs to establish the CBL as a center for people looking for deeper spirituality and sense of meaning beyond the boundaries of traditional institutions;
- Create ongoing connections with current and past individuals and groups who have experienced the CBL to invite others to participate; and
- Explore new strategies for engaging with people who may be interested in and/or willing to support the CBL and related ministries.
Communications
- Create, edit, and publish content for website, social media, brochures, presentations, annual reports, print and digital ads, letters and other marketing and communication materials;
- Maintain and update social media accounts (e.g. Facebook and Instagram) and website;
- Track, monitor and analyze content effectiveness on social media platforms; and
- Assist with maintaining connections with our online audience (i.e. appropriately respond to and direct questions, concerns and comments generated from online sources).
Required Skills:
- An understanding of Benedictine spirituality, or an openness and willingness to learn;
- Appreciation for the values of a progressive and innovative faith-based organization;
- Willingness to be innovative in an organization exploring new models and programs;
- Ability to be sensitive to and supportive of varied organizational needs;
- Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to take direction and work within a diverse team;
- Strong organizational skills;
- Ability to self-start, multi-task, respond to changing priorities and meet deadlines;
- Creativity, energy, and a strong attention to detail;
- High level of confidentiality with private and sensitive data;
- Strong experience with photography, videography and podcasting;
- Knowledge and understanding of social media platforms and their strategic use; and
- Ability to analyze and interpret social media metrics.
Education & Qualifications:
- B.S./B.A. in Marketing or Communications or equivalent experience.
- Minimum two years of experience in digital marketing, social media, or graphic design.
- Proficiency with MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Website Management, Constant Contact, and/or similar programs as needed.

Housekeeper
This is a full-time position: working Monday through Friday from 8:00 – 4:30. Housekeepers contribute to the ministries of the Center for Benedictine Life by caring for the Monastery’s chapel and common areas, for Spirit Center our 22-room retreat center, and for our other guest accommodations. Tasks are directed by the Head of Housekeeping and include sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and polishing floors; washing linens, dishes, and windows; dusting tables, lamps, and bookcases; making beds and cleaning bathrooms.
Wages begin well above minimum wage, based on experience. Steady work with breaks, snacks, and midday dinner; along with participation in a dynamic community.
Cook
Do you enjoy cooking and baking? Does the thought of preparing healthy, family-style meals for 25-plus people excite you? Do you enjoy working in a dynamic environment with a variety of individuals? Do you believe that a clean kitchen is a healthy kitchen? The Center for Benedictine Life at the Monastery of St. Gertrude has an opportunity for a creative individual to join our Kitchen staff.
This is a part-time position: working 24 hours per week. Cooks contribute to the Center for Benedictine Life by preparing breakfast, dinner (midday meal), and supper daily for the sisters and residents of the monastery, for the guests of our 22-room retreat center, and for the employees in this community. Tasks are directed by the Kitchen Manager and include cooking meals, making salads, baking bread and desserts, minimizing waste, and sharing in the cleaning of the kitchen.
Wages begin well above minimum wage, based on experience, with shift differential for weekends and holidays. Benefits include: pay is $12-$14/hr. based on experience; shift-differential pay for weekends and holidays; prorated paid time off for holidays, vacations, and sickness; steady work with breaks, snacks, and midday dinner; participation in a dynamic community.
Caregiver
Join us in a ministry of healing hospitality! The Center for Benedictine Life at the Monastery of St. Gertrude seeks Certified Nursing Assistants and Caregivers to become part of the team on the Sun Porch floor on the evening and night shifts, with a flexible schedule and shift differential. No certification required; training is provided. Our team members provide 24 hours/7 days a week care for the sisters living on the assisted living floor.
Assistant Innkeeper
Do you have a heart for hospitality and service? Do you enjoy welcoming others and providing a place of peace? The Center for Benedictine Life at the Monastery of St. Gertrude has an opportunity for a welcoming, service-oriented individual to offer hospitality at the Inn at St. Gertrude’s, our award winning four-bedroom bed & breakfast.
This is a part-time position in support of our full-time Innkeeper: working one weekend a month, and as a backup when the Innkeeper is away on vacation. Responsibilities include welcoming arriving guests, providing continental breakfast and evening dessert, cleaning rooms after guests depart, and washing dishes and linens.
Additional weekly work is available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays if interested.
Benefits include: variable scheduling coordinated with the Innkeeper, meals on working days, welcome at monastery prayer times and Masses, and participation in a dynamic community.
The Center for Benedictine Life at the Monastery of St. Gertrude is a 501(c)(3) corporation.
