The novice to be received comes before all in the oratory and promises stability, fidelity to the monastic way of life, and obedience. This is done in the presence of God and the saints. — Rule of St. Benedict, Chapter 58:17-18
Benedictine stability is a vow to live in a particular place and with particular people for life. It is a commitment to meet challenging times with courage and steadfastness. In truth, we are all called to an “emotional stability which is the attitude of the heart that brings us to learn from life, rather than bolt from its strings” (Joan Chittister). When we rush from place to place, job to job, relationship to relationship we remain forever on the surface of life. When we put down roots we find time. We learn about ourselves and others. We grow emotionally, spiritually, and communally.
During these retreat days, we will reflect on the teachings of Benedict that call us to stability. We will consider the meaning of stability in everyday life. We will ask ourselves:
- Which beliefs do I need to hold onto? How do I hold onto them?
- How do I live out stability? In my home? In my place of work?
- What does stability have to do with my spiritual and psychological growth?
- How do I practice stability in a world that is in constant change?
The Center for Benedictine Life at the Monastery of St. Gertrude and Spirit Center present three retreats based on the vows of Benedictine life: stability, fidelity to the monastic way of life, and obedience. Each retreat explores one vow and its applicability for individuals, families, churches, workplaces, and any other community. The retreats stand alone; participation in one does not require participation in the others.
