The Spiritual Discipline of Contemporary Iconography

With Kara Gillette

October 10 - 16, 2024

Program is fully booked

Iconography Retreats are a time to break from our busy modern lives and connect deeply with God through the ancient practice of icon writing.

Throughout this 5-day retreat, instructor Kara Gillette will provide detailed instruction and guidance, as well as individual support. Participants will learn the art of iconography using a combination of traditional techniques and processes with the aid of modern materials such as acrylic paint and 23kt patent gold.

Because at its heart iconography is a spiritual discipline, emphasis will be placed on spirituality and embracing our work as a form of prayer. Participants should to prepare for a time of silence and contemplation while engaging with their creative selves and with the One in whose image we were created.

All materials will be provided.

No experience is necessary. This retreat is appropriate to beginners. All that is required is a willingness to learn and a desire to be present to the process.

Kara Gillette
Kara Gillette is a contemporary iconographer originally from Portland, Oregon. Kara’s creative journey took a transformative turn in 2015 when she encountered the ancient practice of iconography. As she meticulously painted layer upon layer, the sacred faces of Christ and the Theotokos emerged, unveiling a profound spiritual connection that awakened Kara to a new depth of artistic expression. Over the course of the following years, Kara dedicated herself to extensive studies in both acrylic and egg tempera mediums, honing her technical skills and refining her artistic voice. Today, as an accomplished iconographer, teacher, and retreat leader, Kara finds great joy…
