“Whether we know it or not, we’re an iconographic people,” Father Damian Higgins says. “We’re surrounded by images we respond to, but mostly they advertise. They direct us toward a product. Holy icons direct us not toward themselves, but toward the divine.”

Fr. Damian Higgins has been painting icons for his monastery and for churches and homes around the world for nearly 30 years. He began teaching the process at the request of those who felt drawn to the depth and beauty of the art form and wanted to understand more about its spirituality and theology. When Fr. Damian came to Holy Transfiguration Monastery in 1988, he sought to enter into the wonderful rhythm of monastic life he had experienced at Mt. Tabor.
